Bruce Barton Jr., 80, of Prairie Village, KS, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2026 surrounded by family.

Born on July 6, 1945, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Bruce and Jane Peek Barton, Bruce attended Pembroke Country Day School before studying at both Santa Clara University and his beloved University of Missouri. Following graduation from Mizzou, Bruce was drafted into the U.S. Army at the height of the Vietnam War. Despite the war’s widespread unpopularity amongst his generation, he answered the call to serve with deep personal integrity, doing his duty to his country and serving honorably in combat around Da Nang, Vietnam.

After the war, Bruce returned home to start a career at the Percy Kent Bag Company, helping lead the family business alongside his brother Steve and eventually becoming Chairman and CEO in 1987. After the company’s sale in 2001, Bruce began a second career in private wealth management that he enjoyed for more than two decades. In 1984, Bruce married the love of his life, Dianne Downey Barton. Together they shared 42 wonderful years of marriage and built a life centered around family, faith, laughter, and tradition.

Bruce was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Stephen Peek Barton. He is survived by his beloved wife, Dianne; his children, Christopher Downey Barton (Cortney) and Caroline “Carrie” Barton Tudas (Ryan); his sister, Ree Barton Douthat; his sisters-in-law, Catherine Kirwan Barton and Barbara Downey Lacy; and his seven adored grandchildren: Charles, William, Neal “Skip,” and Lucy Jeanne Barton, and Blakely, Robert “Beau”, and Brody Tudas. He is also survived by many much-loved nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and dear friends.

Some of Bruce’s happiest moments were spent with family in Boca Grande, Florida, summer excursions to Colorado, celebrating Christmas traditions, cheering on the Royals and Mizzou, coaching Chris’s little league baseball team, and enjoying time with friends and family. An avid if decidedly average golfer, he was a member of the Kansas City Country Club where he served on the Board of Directors. Above all, he loved watching his son and daughter build families of their own.

A lifelong and deeply devout Catholic, Bruce’s faith guided every aspect of his life. He will be remembered most as a devoted husband, father, grandfather (“Pop”), brother, uncle, cousin and loyal friend whose warmth, humor, and generous spirit touched everyone who knew him.

The Barton family extends heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers at The Heritage of Overland Park and Ascend Hospice for their compassionate care.

A funeral Mass will be held on Friday May 29, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. at Cure of Ars Catholic Church 9403 Mission Rd Leawood, Kansas 66206, followed by a private family burial at Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the First Hand Foundation or the Alzheimer’s Association.
