James Melvin Tinsley
James Melvin “Jim” Tinsley, 81, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away on June 7, 2026.
Jim was born on July 21, 1944, in Garnett, Kansas, to James Oliver Tinsley and Bernadine
Gwinia Dart Tinsley. He was welcomed into a large and close-knit extended family, as his
mother was one of twelve children. Jim cherished his childhood in Garnett, where he grew up
surrounded by cousins who were not only family, but also lifelong friends and classmates. He
graduated from Garnett High School in 1962 and went on to attend Iola Community College,
graduating in 1965.
Jim’s career was as diverse as his interests. Early in his adult life, he proudly graduated from
the Oklahoma City Police Academy and served as a police officer with both the Pittsburg,
Kansas and the Lenexa, Kansas Police Departments. He carried great pride in his law
enforcement service and the opportunity to serve his communities. Following this, Jim built a
successful career in a variety of logistics and distribution roles, spending many years in the
transportation and shipping industries, including work supporting the distribution of pet products.
Throughout his professional life, Jim was known for his strong work ethic, practical
problem-solving skills, and ability to connect with people from all walks of life.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved sister, Judith Annette Tinsley.
Throughout his life, Jim was blessed with a large family. He was married to five remarkable
women, including Glenna Bowman, with whom he shared daughter Robyn; Sheryll Croy, with
whom he shared sons Michael and James Jason; Patti Thornton, with whom he shared
daughter Kristen; Donna Tinsley; and finally Betsy Conrad, whom he married in 2005.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Betsy; his children, Robyn (John) Caladim, Michael (Haley)
Tinsley, James (Elaine) Tinsley, and Kristen (Scott) Schuman; and his stepchildren by Betsy,
Chris (Doan) Dudding and Kimberley (Chris) Turner.
He was a proud grandfather to Justin, Amber, Brittney, Anica, Nadia, Joseph, Madison, Jakob,
Joshua, Camden, Carter, Forrest, Abby, Zoey, and Bailey, and a delighted great-grandfather to
Briar, Henry, Kate, Wesley, Aurora, Skylar, and Pierce.
Jim grew up playing basketball and football and maintained a lifelong passion for automobiles. A
devoted car enthusiast, he was an active member of both the Kansas City Miata Club and the
MG Club. Whether attending car events, working on a project in his garage, or simply talking
cars with friends, Jim found great joy in the hobby he loved.
Although Kansas City was home, North Carolina always held a special place in his heart and he
lived there for a good portion of his adult life. He enjoyed weekend drives with Michael, Kristen
and step-daughter Jaime to Hanging Rock, sharing breakfast and enjoying the view on lazy
mornings.
Jim and Betsy shared an active and vibrant life together. They loved dancing, entertaining
friends, and participating in their community. Jim enthusiastically supported Betsy’s many
philanthropic endeavors and enjoyed the friendships they built through their neighborhood and
social activities.
To many neighbors, Jim was best known as the friendly face in his garage. His “man cave”
became a gathering place where he was surrounded by family mementos and could often be
found tinkering with cars, visiting with friends, and greeting the neighborhood dogs, who quickly
learned that a visit to Jim’s garage usually came with a treat.
Jim will be remembered for his love of family, his generosity, his sense of humor, his passion for
automobiles, and the friendships he cultivated throughout his life. He leaves behind many
cherished memories and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Per his wishes, no ceremony is scheduled. A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at a later date.

Jim will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. I send sympathy to his children and grandchildren.
May God bless you Jim and carry you with him forever.
