Dean Otto Schumacher

Dean Otto Schumacher, born July 2, 1937, passed away peacefully at home in Leawood, Kansas, on July 12, 2026, at the age of 89.

Dean was born in Grafton, North Dakota, to Otto and Bergina Schumacher. He lived there until moving to Moorhead, Minnesota, to attend Concordia College. A talented athlete, Dean earned recognition as an All-State basketball player in high school.

Dean graduated from Concordia College in 1959 with a double major in Economics and Psychology. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and later served in the Army Reserves, where he was called to serve again in 1963.

Following his service, Dean began his career with The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. Over 16 successful years, he held various positions and advanced to the role of Business Counselor for the central United States, working from his office in Chicago, Illinois. He later started his own Goodyear dealership in Fargo, North Dakota, which he ran for 10 years before moving to Overland Park, KS.

Dean is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Sandra Lee Schumacher; his son, Tyler Leighton Schumacher and wife Darcey; his daughter, Lynn Rae Pannell; his four grandchildren; and his three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Mark Warren Schumacher, and his sister, Nancy Kehl.

Anyone who knew Dean knew he enjoyed company and conversation. He had a remarkable memory and always made everyone feel welcome.

Dean’s life was marked by family, faith, love, and lasting memories. He loved watching KU basketball and spent years working as an usher so he could enjoy the games in person. He was a faithful member of Atonement Lutheran church for over 30 years.

Dean and Sandy enjoyed the arts and music Kansas City had to offer, including attending the Kansas City Symphony. Dean especially enjoyed his membership in several ballroom dance clubs.

Dean’s warmth, humor, faith, and gift for conversation made him unforgettable. His family will carry forward the stories, laughter, and love he shared so freely throughout his life.

Services will be held at Atonement Lutheran Church 9948 Metcalf Ave. Overland Park, Kansas 66212 on September 17, 2026 at 11:00 am.

Cathy Boomer has a very calming influence and sense of peacefulness about her, even in the most emotional situations. "I recently had an opportunity to use your services after my father and step-mother died within a 7 week period. Because I had dealt with Michelle Parks previously when my mother-in-law died, I contacted her when the need arose. I could not have been more pleased with my experience. Dad wanted to be cremated and Mom wanted a traditional burial with a casket. I sat down with Michelle each time in your beautiful facility and she made it easy for me to understand the options as she gently guided me through the process. She covered all the bases in one sitting and I was impressed with the very competitive price structuring of your services."

"Michelle was absolutely fabulous each time. I felt that I received very personal service and she was available to answer my questions at any hour. She was understanding, compassionate, and very knowledgeable about her industry. I am hoping to take a break from your services for a while, but when the need arises again, I will call Signature Funerals."

Bryan C. Nelson M.D.

"Even though the passing of my father was a traumatic experience as would be expected, working with Cathy Boomer and the team at Signature Funerals, made the entire experience one to be cherished and remembered in only the most positive of lights. From the time hospice was called in to assist my father and our family through his final transition, to the planning and actual day of his service Signature Funerals handled every detail. In particular Cathy Boomer displayed an innate and unique ability to explain each and every step, being very careful not to overwhelm us during a very fragile time for our family. Looking back on this, it is evident that this is not only an important piece if ensuring a pleasant experience, but that it is a fine line that I believe is not necessarily shared by all that provide the type of service as Signature Funerals. The time that Cathy and the spent with us in the days leading up to my father’s service was focused on anticipating things we may not have thought of, things we needed to know as well as understanding what was important to our family and my father to ensure the service truly did honor his life."

"As said before, Cathy and Signature Funerals, helped our family create a memory that we will never forget and cherish forever. I would happily recommend Cathy and her team over and over again."
