Gary T. Benton, 90, of Joplin, Missouri, passed away on November 20, 2025.
Our father was a very funny guy, he was an excellent cook, a vivid storyteller and orator, an athlete, a salesman and a showman. He was a nurse at home, the one who took care of me and my sisters when we were ill. He loved to travel, and he loved beautiful things.
He had a fast and brilliant smile and quick wit. Whether telling a story, making everyone laugh, or simply being the center of attention, Gary had a way of drawing people in and leaving a lasting impression.
His childhood was full of mischief, adventure, family, and friends—retold, they were colorful, action-packed, and always humorous tales. He spoke fondly of his sister, parents, and grandparents, often reminiscing about his aunts, uncles, dozens of cousins, and the fun they all shared. He came from a long line of sweet, loving, hardworking souls. When we think about being with his family it feels warm, welcoming, and comforting.
Gary was a true ambassador of sports, play, and fitness. He believed in the importance of staying active and making the most of life. He taught those around him to dive into every experience with enthusiasm, whether it was sports, adventure, or just sharing a good meal. He was a man with strong opinions and a commanding presence, but his warmth and humor always made him a beloved figure to those who knew him.
His legacy: Laughter, many lessons in cooking, driving, swimming, tennis, golf, sledding, skiing, how to start a fire, how to spend money (or not), his love and appreciation for wine, his love for the outdoors—especially the West, the importance of play, exercise and nutrition, his affection for the holidays, the fact (and evidence) that it never hurts to ask, and his excitement for exploring—new places, new people, new tastes, new challenges.
Gary is survived by his sister, cousins,  4 daughters, 9 grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. A private memorial will be held in the spring.
