Gabriel Thomas Wightman, 19, most precious and beloved son, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend spread his angel wings and rose into heaven on January 20th, 2024.
Gabe was born May 19th, 2004, a gift to Cristi and Ted. He was a sweet and fearless little boy who loved people and adventures and anything with wheels or computer components. He learned to “drive” at age 3 and could be seen drifting his little blue plastic Mustang which matched his dad’s big blue Mustang. Gabe participated in martial arts and earned his second degree black belt. In elementary school, Gabe won the Sunflower Award for being a friend who always made sure to include everyone. When he was in middle school, he built his own computer and seemed destined to change the world with his natural propensity for technology and helping people. In high school, Gabe’s love of music led him to spend hours helping out with and playing trombone in the Blue Valley Southwest band. After Gabe graduated from Blue Valley Southwest High School in 2022, he went on to study Computer Information Systems at Pittsburg State. His passion for music was strong and he was a proud member of the Pitt State Pride of the Plains marching band and the pep band. Gabe’s life was enriched by his tight knit friend groups and leaders at both Southwest and Pitt State.
One of Gabe’s joys in life was being a Boy Scout. A big accomplishment for him was becomingan Eagle Scout just like his dad while with Troop 459. He enjoyed the camaraderie at high adventure bases and camps with an outstanding group of young men and dads he had been with since Tiger Cubs. Thunderhawks you know who you are. Gabe genuinely loved being outside and exploring. Many family trips also involved camping, climbing, sleeping in a hammock, cheering his dad on in the Jeep, swimming, kayaking, and looking for people to rescue.
Gabe was a wise old soul with a wicked smart intellect and a penchant for witty banter. He was incredibly kind and always had a genuine smile on his face. He looked out for others and sought to leave places better than he found them. Gabe never hesitated to help. He was often the first one to pitch in and the last one to leave. He had a servant’s heart. Gabe’s presence and spirit brought comfort and joy. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Gabe was preceded in death by Great Grandparents Vernon and Adelaide Schroeder, Great Grandparents Henry & Ruth Walz, Grandpa Norman Foster. He is survived by his adoring parents Ted and Cristi Wightman, Grandma Carol Foster, Grandparents Darris & Roma McConkey, Aunts Darcie Reeson, Sarah Foster, and Michele Saxton. Uncle Tyler Saxton. Nieces Adelaide Saxton and Paige Reeson. Cousins Gage Miller, Cole Reeson, Benaiah Saxton and Daniel Saxton.
Gabe’s Celebration of Life will be held at Colonial Presbyterian Church (9500 Wornall Road, Kansas City MO, 64114) on Saturday, January 27th at 4pm. Reception to follow celebration. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Sugar Kittens Café & Cattery (cat rescue) in Liberty, Mo. Gabe loved cats and his heart would be so happy to know that that he was helping to take care of kitties in need.

Cristi & Ted, I am so disappointed that I will miss Gabe’s celebration of life…. Phil & I are giving a training session at our church at that time. May God wrap you in His arms Prayers, love, strength 💕.
Ted and Cristi –
My condolences.
Great to know that Gabe was a trombone player. We trombonists all have an affinity for one another and that great instrument.
My prayers and thoughts are with you during this difficult time.
Ted and Cristi, my deepest condolences. I didn’t have the pleasure of meeting Gabe, but it sounds like he was an exemplary young man. If he was anything like his father I’m sure that is the case. So very sorry for your loss, prayers for strength and ultimately peace during this challenging time. ~Luke
Cristi, you may not remember me – Maribeth Price, former counselor at Countryside. But I remember you, with your sweet smile and kind ways. As another mom who lost her only child, my heart breaks for you. I found some ways that helped me cope. If you ever want to talk, my email address is below. Bless you.
My deepest condolences to Ted, Cristi and family for the loss of your precious Gabe. I cannot imagine the pain in your hearts. May the lord wrap you both in his grace during this time.
We fondly watched Gabe grow up in our neighborhood and our hearts ache for you Ted and Cristi. You instilled Gabe with every positive virtue that a son could have. There’s no doubt he was going to continue to make this world a better place. He will forever remain in our hearts.
Ted and Cristi, I am so sorry for you and your family and friends with Gabe’s passing to be with God in Heaven. My deepest sympathies and prayers go out to you. Among the chaos and noise of Boy Scouts as a Scout merit badge leader, I enjoyed working with Gabe at campouts, at Colonial, and on the phone in his pursuit of Scouts highest rank of Eagle, and he was always thoughtful, smart, conscientious, and kind…an example for others. May God hold him in the palm of his hand.
I am very sorry for you loss. I am one of Gabe’s online friends and I miss him so much! He was a fantastic friend to all of us and we are all devastated by his departure. May he rest in peace and I pray that his soul is safe.
My condolences to you two. I remember watching Gabe and all the boys along the trail as we ventured out in our Jeeps. Gabe was always along for the ride but didn’t miss a step anytime he could get out and explore. I could imagine that one day he and the other boys would be leading our trail rides. I loved hearing about the Boy Scout outings and caves they got to explore. Many hugs and prayers to you guys.
I am so sadden to hear of your loss, and the communities loss of such a wonderful person. He was always so kind to Clark and the wild Chickens. He will be missed.
Ted and Cristi,
Aden and I are both heartbroken over the loss of Gabe.
He was such a kind young man and a great leader.
We will be there Sat to celebrate him and pray with you.
I can’t stop thinking about you all.
Ted and Cristi, I had the honor of knowing your son through scouts, the emerald regiment, and track. I specifically remember the pure kindness of his soul and the positive attitude and impact your son made on everything he took part in. He never failed to help when asked and strived to mentor and teach others whenever possible. The specific memory that comes to mind is when we were both running at Track practice and we ended up running the 8 mile workout together because we matched each others pace. Even consumed with exhaustion, he never failed to offer a fist bump and say “good stuff” through a tomato red face and heavy breathing to end our run. That never failed to bring a smile to my face and help ease the pain from the workout we shared together. Gabe will truly be missed and you’re all in my thoughts and prayers.
I am so terribly sorry for your loss! My condolences to your family!
My heart breaks for you both! Prayers for strength during this time. Gabe will be missed dearly from his Pitt crew!
My condolences to Gabriels family. His grandmother Carol Schroeder was my good friend at Bonner Springs High School in 1966. I am so sorry for your loss. Ruth Ellen Dungans Hanson 5301 Apache Ct Shawnee, Kansas 66226. 913-213-5723.
Deepest sympathy on the passing of your precious son Gabriel, God bless and strengthen your family at this time and always. May his soul rest in peace.
Ted & Cristi, I am so sorry for your loss. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers ,
Ted and Cristi,
I pray for you both that the “peace that passes all understanding” will wrap around you today and always. Gabe and Cristi were the first to come by to welcome our family to the neighborhood. If we were outside and Gabe drove by in his red truck, he never failed to smile and wave. He will be sorely missed and always remembered.
Ted
I am so sorry for your loss. There are no words. No words.
We were heart broken to hear about Gage. We are so sorry for your loss! Your family are in our thoughts and prayers.
