
Shirley Jones Schutzel was born September 12, 1930 and passed away December 6, 2024 at her SeniorCare Home in Overland Park, Kansas. She was born at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City MO to Anne and William B. (Jack) Jones an area lumber yard owner. Shirley attended Marlborough Grade School, then graduated from Paseo High School in 1947 where she was voted “Most Jolly Good” her Senior year. She attended William Woods College for two years then graduated from the University of Missouri, Columbia in 1951, where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. She was active in the Theta Alumnae Club and Theta Mother’s Club. On September 13, 1952 she married Emil Schutzel and together celebrated 70 years of marriage.
Among her volunteer and philanthropic interests were United Way Captain (15 years), Deaconess at Colonial Church in Prairie Village, Symphony Women’s Association, Second Fiddle Thrift Shop, Nelson Gallery Friends of Art, Girl Scout and Cub Scout Leader for her children. She was on the board of Children’s Mercy Hospital’s Therapeutic Learning Center. She was a Census Volunteer for the 1980 census and precinct chairman for the Republican Party.
Shirley had many interests and hobbies. She participated in a weekly sewing group, bridge group and monthly book club. She enjoyed traveling the country and touring Europe with her many friends. She was a member of Indian Hills Country Club where she enjoyed playing tennis and golf.
Her children and grandchildren remember her for her caring and fun personality. She enjoyed catering to the interests of her family and surprising them with unique adventures. She made the holidays unforgettable with her stellar gourmet meals and witty and genuine personality. She was a devoted wife, mother, aunt, and grandmother. She was a beautiful person that made life so much fun.
The family would like to say a special thank you to the Vineyard House staff and their selfless service to Shirley over the last 2 years. During the hardest times of our lives, they were compassionate, hardworking, and patient beyond measure. We would also like to thank Ascend and KC Hospice for their faithful care and support.
She is preceded in death by her parents Anne and Jack Jones, brother J.P Jones, husband Emil Schutzel, and son Bill Schutzel. She is survived by her children Emil Schutzel (Lynn), Kurt Schutzel (Amy), Elizabeth Speer (Thane), and grandchildren Emil Schutzel, Matt Schutzel, Kris Schutzel, Emily Schutzel, Anna Ramsaur (Matt), Ian Speer (Megan), Tom Speer (fiancé Sarah), Garrett Speer, and Kaylee Speer. A celebration of her life will be held on December 27, 2024 11:00 AM, at Colonial Church, 7039 Mission Road, Prairie Village KS. Lunch Reception to follow.
