Carla Sue Beard Baker, known as “Sue” or “Baker”, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on March 4, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, generosity and love.
Sue cared deeply for all animals and was known for her compassion and advocacy on their behalf. For more than 40 years, Sue worked as a veterinary technician, dedicating her career to the care and well-being of animals. And this is where she met her husband, veterinarian Robert “Doc” Cannon. She had a special passion for Great Danes and served for many years on the Board of Directors of the Great Dane Club of Greater Kansas City.
She and Doc lived a rich life, touring Europe many times on river cruises, achieving KU basketball super-fan status, and enjoying insider status at their favorite restaurant Cafe Trio, where they were wed and thereafter hosted many festive anniversary parties. For many years, she and Doc joyfully spent half their time in San Diego with her daughter and family, creating treasured memories with her grandchildren.
Those who knew Sue will remember her as a loyal friend with the sweetest and most beautiful soul. She had a vibrant flashy style and an open heart. Sue was always there for anyone in need, offering support, kindness, and loving non-judgmental advice. She and Doc had a special tradition: randomly buying tanks of gas or giving away cash to those who might be in need during the holidays. Her warmth and generosity touched countless lives.
She is survived by her husband Robert Cannon, her daughter Carrie Baker Dodge (John Dodge), her cherished grandchildren Kate and Jack Dodge, her sister Beth Beard (Doug Bayer), her brother, Roger Beard (Ken Harrison) and her husband’s sons Chad and Rob Cannon.
Sue’s love, spirit and kindness will live on in the many people and animals whose lives she touched.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 4 at the Fillmore Chapel at Unity Village, 400 Unity Circle North, Unity Village, MO 64065. A visitation is planned for 1:00 p.m. followed by a service at 2:00 pm. There will be reception following. Please consider a contribution to Wayside Waifs www.waysidewaifs.org in Sue’s memory.
