Betty Major, 94, of Kansas City passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 12, 2014. Betty was born in Kansas City, Missouri on February 7, 1920 to Melissa and Leonard Laughlin. She was raised in Independence and Liberty, Missouri, graduated from Liberty High School and attended William Jewell College where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 15, 2014 at the George Hamilton Combs Chapel at Country Club Christian Church, 6101 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, Missouri.
Betty married F. Lee Major, Jr. on March 3, 1940. They were married 53 years until his death in 1993. Betty is survived by her loving children, F. Lee Major III (Lindsay) of Prairie Village and Kathleen Buckley (Edward) of Overland Park; her grandchildren, John Major (Amy), Rebecca Rippey, Catesby Major (Brad Dowd), and Patrick Buckley; and her great-grandchildren, Emma and Kara Rippey and Jack Major. Betty is also survived by her sisters-in-law JoAnn Laughlin, Bettianne Laughlin and Martha Major, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Vera Greenlease, and her brothers, William, Lyle and Raymond Laughlin. Betty was a member of Country Club Christian Church for 46 years and its Circle 18. She was a charter member of the Tomahawk Chapter, D.A.R., and she was a member of Colonial Dames of America, Rotary Club 13 Wives of Rotarians, Philharmonic League, The Sewing Club, The Carriage Club, The River Club, and Mission Hills Country Club.
The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the staffs of Crossroads Hospice and Care Haven Southmoor for the extraordinary and tender care given to Betty during her final weeks.
