Byron “Beep” P. Duncan, 85 of Prairie Village, KS passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 26, 2019. The Celebration of Life will be on February 1, 2019 at 3:00 pm at the Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Road, Prairie Village, KS, where he was a member for 60 years.
Born on May 17, 1933 in Kansas City, Missouri, Beep was the son of Byron and Susan Duncan. He attended Paseo High School and later obtained an undergraduate degree in Business from the University of Missouri. At Mizzou, he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, where he developed lifelong friendships. His devotion to those friendships, as well as the countless others that he developed during his lifetime, Sigma Chi and Mizzou never lessened or waivered.
At Mizzou, Beep met and married the love of his life, Patricia McKee. After school, Beep joined the Army and served his country proudly. Beep had a long career as a traveling salesman and spent many hours “behind the wheel”. In retirement, he continued his love of driving by volunteering for the “Catch–a–Ride” program.
Sports were also a big part of Beep‘s life. He enjoyed following Mizzou, and his favorite Kansas City sports teams. He also volunteered as a youth basketball coach, and played a lot of golf. Beep truly enjoyed his friendships with fellow golfers through his 40-year membership at Mission Hills Country Club. His sailing adventures and many golf trips were special memories for him. However, his favorite passion was watching his grandchildren swim, dance, cheerlead, play soccer, baseball and basketball, and even throw the javelin. He was a gentle giant who was loved by all who knew him.
Byron is survived by his wife of 62 years,Patricia S. Duncan, son David (Kelly) Duncan,Tampa, FL; daughter Kim (Rob) Hunter, Prairie Village, KS; grandchildren Matt Duncan, Kasey (Nick) Sharpe, Allie Hunter, Riley Hunter, and Lauren Hunter; his sister Suzanne Capps; and brother–in–law Mike McKee.

” BEEP “sounds like you had a very fulfilling, happy, exciting, loyal, loving LEGACY.Matt I’m so sorry for your loss, thanks for sharing his life. Love GRANDMA JUDEE.
Only fond memories of growing up alongside the Duncan family, with Mr. and Mrs. Duncan treating us like second set of Duncan children. Mr. Duncan was always fun, funny, and inquisitive about what my siblings and I were up to as we grew up. It wasn’t hard to look up to him, and not just because he was the biggest man I’d ever met. And hats off to him for convincing a great woman like Pat to marry him and enhance his life the way she did. I’ll miss seeing him on visits home. May he rest in peace. All my best to his family, with special hello to David and Kim.
I had the extreme good fortune to grow up calling Byron “Uncle Beep”. Due to our geographical proximity and similar ages, our two families were particularly close and Beep and Pattie were truly my second set of parents.
I have been describing him as a “gentle giant” over the past few days and to see that description in his obituary was perfect. He was a stable and constant source of happiness, encouragement and love to me. While the years have distanced us from each other, I was always blessed by Uncle Beep and I will miss him greatly!
Pattie, David and Kim and the rest of the family– my prayers are with you.
Well there could not be another Sigma Chi Chapter, let alone any other fraternity, that could be more proud to call him Brother. There are a great many Xi Xi ‘s with strong arms that were waiting for him where he has gone. He has made that great Chapter even stronger by joining them.
