E. Kay Perry

Kay Perry (nee Slump) 83, of Overland Park, KS passed away on August 28^th, 2023 after an extended illness. Kay was born in Red Oak, IA on July 15^th, 1940 to Carroll and Kathleen (Williams) Slump, where she was the oldest of 6 siblings. She graduated from Stanton Iowa High School in 1958 and shortly after married Bob Perry from Red Oak, IA. They eventually moved to Overland Park, KS where their 2 daughters, Lisa and Ann were born.

While volunteering for the Chaplain’s dept. at St Luke’s hospital she felt that she could do more for the patients by becoming a nurse. In order to prepare for her impressive career she pursued an education at Johnson County Community College from which she earned an Associate of Science in Nursing in 1975. Obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Avila University in 1979, she continued her studies at the University of Kansas, graduating with a Master of Science, cum laude, in 1981. Her thesis was published in the Critical Care Quarterly. She then became licensed as an Advanced Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner working at The Menninger Foundation in Topeka, KS for over 10 years. She contributed numerous articles to professional journals including being invited to contribute a chapter to a nursing textbook still being used today.

In 1993 she suddenly came down with a case of severe Blepharospasm. After receiving relief from Botox injections and eyelid surgery she was able to pursue her passion for wellness using and selling Juice Plus as a multi-level marketer. She eventually became a National Marketing Director and owner of Perry Plus Inc.

Her health began to decline after the death of her youngest daughter in 2010 and she retired in 2020. She was able to live independently at home with her beloved dog Buddie and the excellent caregivers/friends from Always There Healthcare. She was active in her Treesmill HOA as she loved to host parties and events in her home. She also spent time putting together genealogy scrapbooks.

But for Kay her journey with Christ is her most shining achievement. She always felt that God had a hand in caring and providing for her both spiritually and materially when she needed him most. This included the support and love she received from her friends and bible study groups with Cornerstone Presbyterian and the pastors from that church throughout her many years of membership.

Kay is going to join her daughter Ann, her sisters Gloria, Mary and Donna, as well as her mother and father, cousins, aunts and uncles to celebrate her eternal life in heaven. She is survived by her daughter Lisa Drum (Dave), sister Peg Lundgren (Doug) and brother John Slump (Nancy), grandchildren Nicholas Drum (Grace) and Kyle Drum; Megan Schumacher Wise (Eli), Miranda Schumacher and Matthew Schumacher (Natalie); great grandchildren Hudson and Maggie Wise along with her beloved nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church. Leawood, KS on October 6, 2023 at 11:00am and a graveside service in Red Oak, IA on October 7, 2023 at 11:00am with luncheon to follow. Memorial contributions can be made to Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, or the National Association for Rural Mental Health-The Ann Schumacher Rural Clinic Practice Award.
