On Friday, October 12th, Jean Flanery, of Raytown, Missouri, passed away after a two-year battle with lung cancer. She was born in Kansas City, Missouri on March 30, 1947. Jean is survived by five children and eleven grandchildren: Aaron Flanery, of Raytown, and his two children, Luca and Jax; Elizabeth Rockwood, of Castle Rock, Colorado, her husband, Andy Rockwood, and their three children, Elaina, Andrew, and Reagan; Molly Flanery, of Raytown, and her four children, Zachary, Tierra, Miguel, and Elijah; Stephen Flanery, of Kansas City, his wife, Courtney Young, and their daughter, Cosi; and Amanda Santos, of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, her husband, André Santos, and their son André Pila. She is also survived by her brother, Steve Muir, and her sister, Bonnie Tyson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Flanery. After 30 years apart, they will finally be reunited. She was also preceded in death by her father, Walter “W.F” Muir, and her mother, Kathleen Muir.

Jean, known as “Mother” to her children and as “Giga” to her grandchildren, was a caretaker for far more than just her own, always opening her home and lifting up those in need. She was a steady and constant figure for her family and her friends, a perfect representation of how to live graciously and for the betterment of others. She was courageous always, from carrying her children through profound loss to fighting cancer until her last days. She was a teacher, a gardener, a piano-player, a woman of faith. Jean was truly one-of-a-kind.

Jean’s life will be celebrated with a service at Vineyard Church (8301 Lamar Ave., Overland Park, KS 66207) Tuesday, October 16th at 4 pm. An informal, come-as-you-are reception will follow from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. While Jean loved flowers, the family also welcomes donations to the Sarah Cannon Fund at American Cancer Society or to Vineyard Community Church.
