Joan I Delphia, 87, passed away at home on July 25, 2016. Those who have spent much time around Joan ‘Joanie’ Delphia will remember her infectious ‘pixie’ demeanor. She is known for her skills at the bridge table, her love of a well-organized social event and knowledge of all things baseball, especially ‘dem bums’ from Brooklyn. She loved to recall times spent as a kid at Ebbets field, and if you let her linger too long on the subject you could easily taste her detest for the management that moved the Dodgers to California.
Joan grew up in Brooklyn, earned a nursing degree from St. Vincent’s School of Nursing in New York and met the love of her life, Robert Delphia, while he was on shore leave from the US Navy. The two were married in 1949 in Norton, Kansas and moved to the Kansas City area, where Robert (who preceded her in death in February, 1999) earned his medical degree. Subsequently, they moved to Olathe Kansas, where he opened a medical practice and they raised their family.
She is survived by her children, Susan Dziedzic (Tom) of Falls Church, VA, Robert E Delphia Jr. (Melissa) of Columbia, SC., Judy Delphia of Prairie Village, KS and Don Delphia of Prairie Village, KS. She is also survived by her brother Paul Phillips of Batavia, NY and her sister. Helen Huley, of Boston, MA. The memorial services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Delphia Scholarship Fund at Olathe Medical Center (913-791-4216) or to St. Ann Catholic Church in Prairie Village (913-660-1182). Assistance by Funeral Advocates.
