Kathy Lou Palmer, beloved wife, mother, and friend, passed away peacefully at home with family and friends by her side after a courageous battle with cancer. She will be missed dearly.
Kathy was born May 19th, 1954, the fourth of six children to Warren and Viola Boomer of Portis, KS. She attended Kansas State University and was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. After graduating, Kathy moved to Kansas City to become an elementary P.E. teacher in the Shawnee Mission School District. Kathy was an athlete at heart, she enjoyed teaching, playing, and watching sports.
Also upon moving to K.C., Kathy’s strong faith led her to join Westwood Lutheran Church. Its quaintness reminded her of the church her family attended in Osborne, KS. She was the Children’s Choir Director for many years carrying out her passion for music and teaching. Following Westwood’s closing in 2011, she joined Village Presbyterian Church. Being a care receiver through their Stephen Ministry program, led her to become a Stephen Minister herself. The organization was very important to her, as was her unyielding faith.
Kathy was naturally creative, taking after her mother Vi, a beautiful seamstress and painter. She shared this joy of creativity with her daughter, Logan, turning that imaginative spirit into a mother-daughter jewelry business. The endeavor allowed her to create, travel, and enjoy more time with her daughter.
Kathy and her husband, Steve, were a wonderful, loving couple. Spoiling their grandchildren was their number one hobby, along with golf, travel, and spending time with their many friends.
Her proudest accomplishment was her family. She was adored by her grandchildren, who they lovingly called ‘LouLou’. Reading, drawing, and just playing with them was her favorite thing to do. She also took great joy in getting her five brothers’ families together for annual Boomer Bashes and Christmas gatherings, creating lasting memories for the family.
Kathy is survived by her husband, Steve Palmer, her daughter, Logan Dean (Spencer) and their children, Ryder, Violet, and Louis; her step-children Kristy Acree (Tom) and their children Matthew Acree (Kelsey), Madison Finley (Mason), and Mackenzie Swaggart (Cole), Brant Lyerla, Annie Palmer Noren (Jesper) and their children, Emma and Freddy, and Billy Palmer (Courtney) and their children, Will and Jack. She leaves behind her five brothers Gene and Marsha Boomer, Gary and Mary Boomer, Rick and Patty Boomer, Russ and Cathy Boomer, and Kent and Robin Boomer, and many nieces and nephews.
In Kathy’s honor, the family suggests contributions to Village Presbyterian Church 6641 Mission Rd. Prairie Village, KS 66208, or the charity of your choice.
Due to Covid-19 guidelines, there will be a private family service at Village Presbyterian Church on Friday, September 4, 2020 at 3:00 pm. The service will be live-streamed. The instructions on how to access are below.
Instructions for Accessing Live-Stream of Services
Here’s how to watch on line:
- Go to www.villagepres.org
- Go to “Resources” (the 6th option to the right in the top bar)
- Click on Resources and then click on “Live Broadcast”.
- This will bring you to the live broadcast. The screen says “Livestream”.
- When you click on Livestream, information comes up that will tell the viewer the next live stream is on Sunday. That’s always what it says although it is not true – the church just states that to keep things simple on the website. About 5 minutes before the service begins, the live stream should start. If that doesn’t happen, keep checking – it will absolutely start when the service begins.
We were so saddened to hear of Kathy’s passing way too soon. We are asking the Lord to be very close to all her beloved family and friends during this very tender time and bring them the peace that only Christ can bring.

We are so sorry for your loss. Love and prayers for all of you.
Beautiful, dear Kathy. A sorority sister and long time friend. She sang in our wedding. Peace and comfort to her family. I think of her every day as I enjoy my German floral prints and jewelry. She was a treasure.
A heart of Gold, beautiful inside & out…sweet & kind…that was Kathy. She galiantly fought to stay here because she loved you all so very much, but now she knows, one day you will all be together forever…Love Never Dies…
Kent & Russ,
Sorry to hear about your sister. I wish it was open to the public, I would be there for both of you!
She was always a gracious person.
Take care, Buddies-

I am heartbroken for Logan and Kathy’s family! We were both small town girls when we pledged Chi Omega at Kansas State! We both resided in Putnam dorm as freshmen! She was an incredible part of my college/sorority memories which has faded somewhat with her gone. As we became older, she grew into one of the most gracious ladies! Living in Overland Park for the last 30 years we ran into one another often, usually through Chi Omega, Dales Athletic Club and very early on at Hallbrook Country Club. I will miss her so much! My heart is broken too…
So very sorry Steve, Logan and Spencer.
So sorry for your loss, may God gave you all peace and comfort. You have and will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers
Steve, and family. Sorry for your loss. What a grand lady.
I am deeply saddened to hear of Kathy’s passing. She student taught for me in 1976 at Commanche Elementary school. We shared many stories about her Osborne Kansas and my Buffalo Kansas towns. We gave each other grief about our colleges as she was KSU and my KU. She was so good and caring with the students while at Commanche. I believe here Dad was also a teacher as she told me many stories about her brothers while she was younger. What GREAT memories that I have of Kathy. My thoughts and prayers as she was such a lovely person in so many ways.
