Lyle Moreland Armstrong passed peacefully at the age of 87 on September 19, 2020 after a brief illness at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission, KS.
Lyle was born March 1, 1933 to Lois Moreland Armstrong and Elmer H Armstrong in Lincoln, NE. He was preceded in death by his mother Lois Moreland Armstrong, his father Elmer H Armstrong, and brother Dean Armstrong.
He grew up in Topeka, Kansas and met his wife Inez of 65 years in Topeka. A resident of Kansas most of his life, and a veteran of the Korean War. He worked for the US Government for 45 years. Sports were a passion at an early age and in his later years. Baseball in particular, he was an avid Kansas City Royals fan, rarely missing a game on TV or occasionally in the stands. His beloved Kansas Jayhawks basketball team will lose a devoted fan. Lyle loved adventures that involved traveling, outdoors, and physical activity. Many will remember his accomplished sailing career, winning multiple regattas and sailing events both locally, regionally, and nationally, sailing with the US1 fleet. The Armstrong family grew up learning how to snow ski as a family when skiing was just a boutique sport back in the 60’s and 70’s. The Colorado mountains were like a second home to him introducing neighbors, family, and friends to the sport of snow skiing. In recent years he became a caretaker to his wife, he would not have it any other way. Mathew 25:40 “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did it for Me”. Near the end they both walked twice a day, enjoying the parks and paths in Johnson County. Heaven will have a bountiful tomato crop this year as Lyle will surely be added to the award winning team – a salute to all of those who have gone before him. The fish in the pond at 199th and Garner Road will rest a little easier tonight.
He will be missed by his wife of 65 years, Inez Elaine Spreer Armstrong, whom he cherished each day. His children: Michael D. Armstrong (son) and wife Kristen Lofstedt Armstrong, Toni L Armstrong (daughter) and partner Greg Webb, Audrey Armstrong Sparks (daughter) and husband Randy Sparks. Hisgrand children: Cody Armstrong, Marlee Armstrong Dunn and husband Jon Dunn, Cassie Sparks Kuehl and husband Chris Kuehl, Brett Armstrong, Drake Sparks and wife Macy Loring Sparks. And his grandchild, Army David Dunn named after Lyle’s nickname “Army”.
Honor Lyle by donating to Shawnee Community Services Food Pantry, trying a new salsa recipe with fresh tomatoes, taking a long walk with someone special, or enjoying a little ice cream – Lyle liked all the flavors.
A grave site service for friends and family will be held Saturday September 26, at 10:30am, at Shawnee Memorial Gardens, 23215 W. 75 Street, Shawnee, KS.
Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the family. He’ll be missed deeply. ❤️??????
So sorry for your loss. We will keep your family in our prayers.
We are very sorry to hear of your loss. You and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers.
Lyle was a great neighbor. We’ve been neighbors for 32 years. We loved hearing about his time sailing, his assist with the garden, and when we were both down Lyle shoveling our driveway last year! Heaven is getting a great man.
Janice and I grew up in the same neighborhood as Lyle and Inez and their family. Lyle shot a lot of hoops with the local kids in our back yard. I was not aware of his sailing accomplishments. I bought a little ten foot dinghy sailboat and Lyle offered to teach me how to sail. He went out with me several times and never once criticized my lack of sailing ability despite my capsizing the boat on more than one occasion. To this day, I credit Lyle with teaching me how to conserve my energy while treading water. We offer our thoughts and prayers to the family and celebrate his life as we recall fond memories from years gone by.
Greatest Obituary I have ever read. Nothing less would’ve been good enough for Lyle good job. A great friend and an even greater man
We have been next door neighbors of Lyle and Inez for the past 24 years, and they have been wonderful neighbors. We will miss Lyle greatly.
Lyle will definitely be missed at our family reunions. Our thoughts and prayers go out to each of you, especially aunt Inez. Much love,
