Therese Eileen Scanlon Grohman, a sweet and loving Grand Mother, Mother, Wife, Aunt, and Friend to many, passed away today, March 31, 2017. She was 86.

A devout Catholic, Therese always said that her prayer was to keep God in your life always, and then in happy or sad times, God will be there to hold your hand and guide you.

Born May 27, 1930 in Kansas City, Missouri, she was the daughter of Margaret and Bernard Scanlon, both Irish Immigrants: Margaret from County Galway, and Bernard “Barney” from County Sligo. Therese was profoundly proud of her Irish heritage and passed that love down to her children and grandchildren. All who knew her will remember fondly her Irish expressions that she frequently said, such as “For the love of Mike and Dennis Moriarty!” She was the eighth of ten children with 5 brothers and 4 sisters. She is survived by her sister Ann Franke of Kansas City, and her brother Larry Scanlon of Chicago, along with many nieces and nephews.

Therese was modeling in New York City in 1960 when she informed by one of her brothers that he had met her future husband, and that she was to come home right away. Upon arrival, she and Gordon dated for a whole 3 weeks before getting engaged. 5 months later they were married at St. James Catholic Church in Kansas City, Mo. They were married for 56 years and had two children.

Therese is survived by husband Gordon, and their children, grandchildren, and Great Granddaughter. “Nanny” will be missed greatly, not only by her family, but from her many friends as well. Her children: Daughter, Meg (Jim) Winne, children Aidan and Molly. Son Gordon (Holly) and 4 children, daughter Peggy (Henry) Olivarez of Olathe, Kansas, daughter Bridie Grohmann of Kansas City, Missouri, daughter Tess Grohmann of Austin, Texas and son Gordon Jacob Grohmann of Mission, Kansas.

The family would like to thank the staff at Crossroads Hospice for the many kindnesses they showed to her in her final days. The family suggests contributions to St. Ann’s Catholic Church Endowment Fun 7231 Mission Road, Prairie Village, KS. 66208
