Vivian Karlin passed away peacefully on August 2nd, 2017 at her home in Prairie Village, KS.

A beloved mother, sister, teacher and friend – she was born January 5th, 1938 in Hays Kansas to Joseph and Mary (Sander) Schuster. She lived in Ellis, KS. and was especially blessed to have loving role models in her Parents and extended family. She met Cletus Karlin on a blind date, and they married on August 20th, 1960 at St. Mary’s Church in Ellis, KS. Cletus died, in an accident, on April 5th, 1964.

Vivian raised her three sons’ with the loving assistance of her parents and extended family. She graduated, with honors, from Fort Hays State University with a degree in Education and a Masters in Library Science. She taught at St. Joseph’s elementary school in Hays, KS until moving to Kansas City. Vivian was named a master teacher in 1991-92 by her peers in the State of Kansas.

Vivian offered her children Chris, Alan and Paul an upbringing of strong values, faith, patience, and kindness. Vivian was always involved in her children’s activities by being a Cub Scout leader and a 4-H leader. She offered a home always inviting to family and friends.

Vivian was a member of the Daughters of Isabella and VFW Auxiliary since 1964. She especially valued her, more than 40, years as an Associate of the Sisters of Saint Agnes, and friendship with Sister Mary Alice Walters. She shared a lot of support and life experiences with other widows in Hays and Kansas City.

Vivian LOVED music and was a lifetime Choir member -starting – as a teenager, in her hometown of Ellis at St. Mary’s Church, then in Hays at St. Joseph’s Parish, and most recently at St. Ann’s Parish in Prairie Village. After moving to Kansas City in 1996, she was very active in St. Ann’s parish, including the school library, taking care of the candles and a constant member of the prayer chain and Holy Hour.
She finished her working years as a Librarian at Polsenelli Law Firm. She found great joy in raising her sons, music, theater and Chiefs football!

Celebrating the life of Vivian Karlin are her children, Chris, Alan & Paul Karlin and Chris’s wife Beth. Vivian is also survived by her brother Harry Schuster, and his children Sarah ( Jed ) Moyer, Joe ( Heather) Schuster, Phillip ( Anne) Schuster, and Laurel Schuster, and Dear Aunts, Uncles, nieces, nephews, and cherished friends.

Memorial Service will be held at St. Ann’s Church in Prairie Village, KS on Wednesday, August 16th, 2017. A Rosary will be prayed at 1:30 – Funeral Mass at 2:00 – Reception/Ice Cream Social afterwards in the Parish Hall. This is to celebrate her love of Ice Cream too.
